History of the Organization

Alexandra’s Army was founded by an 8-year-old from Bloomington, Indiana. As a 4-year-old, Alex wanted to help her community and decided to create a neighborhood food drive in support of the Hoosier Hills Food Bank. She recognized the importance of everyone having enough to eat, and that it could make a big difference if everyone that was able to help, given what they could. Alex walked through her neighborhood with her father and knocked on dozens of doors. That first year, she was able to help raise over 50 pounds of non-perishable food donations which she brought to the Food Bank

Alex continued her efforts annually,

growing the amount of food each year, and was asked by the Hoosier Hills staff if she had considered expanding her food drive. She accepted the challenge and decided that she could ask other kids in the community to do the same thing as her. Alex stated, “If I can raise 150 pounds of food, then 100 kids can raise 15,000 pounds!” Her math was correct!

Alex created a plan, solicited some of her friends to help, and incorporated it as a non-profit organization with a goal to recruit 100 of Monroe County’s youth to join her Army, collecting food from their neighbors.
